Rants
Android, Jelly Bean, the Cloud, and Google's Long Game
koppie — Thu, 05/16/2013 - 12:52
I've ranted before about Google's long game; see Google's Endgame. I 2011, I predicted that Google was aiming at a unified user interface. I was partially right. Google is still aiming at a unified UI, but their goals are going so much deeper than that. I just wiped my cell phone, and the experience gave me a taste of the future, Google style.
Our Strength

I was just having a conversation with Yelena last week about how other nations perceive Americans as weak. I argued that what others perceive as our weakness, is actually our strength.
Petition to Let Texas Secede: Lowdown on the Hoedown
koppie — Thu, 12/13/2012 - 01:14
There's been a fair bit of buzz on a petition to let Texas secede from the Union. The logic is (a) they want to, and (b) the rest of us would be better off without them. It's hilarious nonsense, of course, but let's look at why.
Jordan's Tax-and-Spend Voter Guide
koppie — Tue, 11/06/2012 - 13:55
I long ago made peace with the fact that I'm a "tax and spend liberal." But, see, it's okay when I like what the government is spending money on. Here's a brief recommendation on how to vote.
Droid Bionic Ice Cream Sandwich: Sweet and Delicious
koppie — Mon, 08/20/2012 - 22:31
Ice Cream Sandwich is the tasty new version of Android. A lot of the latest Android phones have gotten it already, but the Droid Bionic is still waiting. Waiting so long, in fact, it's starting to get embarassing. The truth is Motorola has been working on it, and a few very good "beta" versions have leaked to the web. So good, in fact, people are starting to wonder what they're waiting for. Personally, I got impatient and decided to take matters into my own hands.
The Fight for Your (Thin) Desktop
koppie — Tue, 07/24/2012 - 03:06
For a while now I've felt that the Linux desktop isn't just "as good as" Windows / Mac OS; it's better. But is such an issue even relevant, as everything goes to the cloud? Yes - here's why.
Beethoven's 9th: The Original Mashup
koppie — Mon, 07/09/2012 - 21:41
I don't think you realize just how awesome Beethoven's 9th really is. Beethoven was a rebel in his day - the original punk rocker - and he broke so many rules with his 9th Symphony it's amazing they didn't take away his baton. (Actually they did; he co-conducted the first performance of the 9th but the "real" conductor told the orchestra to ignore Beethoven.)
Disneyland for Nerds

I went to Noisebridge for the first time today. It's this incredible, magical place. After spending all day there, I still can't believe it's real.
SCOTUScare

Today the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. Here's why it's a good thing.
Hellenistic Jews, Abortion, and Passover
koppie — Thu, 04/26/2012 - 08:52
This started as a Facebook argument between myself and some of my right-wing Christian and Catholic friends. (For the record, I admire my friends and respect their faiths, even though they are different from my own.) But the question arose: what is the Jewish position on abortion? The truth is it's something I never researched heavily, so I did a little quick research and summarized it for my friends. Nothing worth publishing, to be sure, but in the process I got to know my own faith even better, and I thanked my friends for prodding me into it. (What does this have to do with the Jewish holiday of Passover? Keep reading.)
