Passing the Uncanny Valley?
koppie — Sun, 01/08/2012 - 10:43
A recent review of the new Tintin movie claims that we have finally passed the Uncanny Valley, and thus a whole new vista of hyper-real animation is open to us. I'm not convinced.
Leaving Your Wallet At Home

There's been more and more talk recently about using your cell phone to pay for things. I'm all for it.
"But, what if I lose my cell phone?" Well, what if you lose your wallet? If you take something valuable out of the house, there's always a chance that something can go wrong. But that's always true. Besides, if you're smart, you've already protected your phone so you can get it back or deactivate it if it gets stolen.
24 Hours with Oneiric Ocelot

I've blogged before about how I hate it when an operating system takes away features that I like. Two years ago, I left KDE for this reason. Two years later, I'm leaving Gnome. Their sin? Removing support for Compiz. I want my spinny cube. To be sure, Gnome 3 has some very nice features, and it's beautiful. But the Gnome developers made a conscious decision to remove support for a popular feature, a feature I lean on heavily.
Roundup: Online Awesomeness for your Kid

You know how I'm a fan of technology, especially my smartphone, so it's not surprising that I've found ways to use it to help me entertain Nathan. Here are my four favorite resources.
The standard caveat applies: anything screen-based is to be taken in small doses. I let him online less than once a day, and only for limited periods of time. Then we read a good old fashioned book, play with Duplo, or build a train set. A real, physical train set using Brio tracks.
Review: Cowboys & Aliens

Two thumbs up.![]()
I went into this movie determined to like it. I told my stepfather: "It's either going to be so good it's good, or it's going to be so bad it's good. It's got Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and aliens. I'm not expecting Citizen Kane." I was right.
Review: Trader Joe's olive oils
koppie — Thu, 08/04/2011 - 10:20
We happened to have three different olive oils in the house. One from Spain, one from Italy, and one from California. So what's a guy and gal to do?
Head in the Clouds

Two new awesome cloud-based services have popped up in the last couple weeks: Google Music, and Spotify. They both offer awesome new ways to enjoy your music, but which one is better? Meanwhile, there's a spoiler hidden among those clouds . . .
Google+ First Impressions
koppie — Mon, 07/11/2011 - 22:59
When a friend of mine said he had Google+ invitations available, I asked for one. Now I'm part of an elite group of early adopters. What does that mean? That means I'm on a brand spanking new social network with 9 friends. That's way below critical mass. You can hear the echo. So, why pay attention?

Thumbs Down
It seems awfully harsh to give this fine piece of software a thumbs down, and perhaps it's undeserved.
Royal Wedding: The Outfits
koppie — Sat, 04/30/2011 - 01:20
Yes, I'm going to talk about the royal wedding. The outfits, no less. I'm more interested in the men's uniforms, of course, but first a tip of the hat has to go to Princess Kate's dress, which was an obvious homage to American actress Grace Kelly, who also married into European royalty. In another apparent homage to the United States, Kate had a Maid of Honor, which apparently isn't usually done in England. Classy.
